April 8, 2025.- The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has officially announced that the International Spirit of the Game Day (iSOTGDay) will now be celebrated each year on May 10, aligning more closely with the global flying disc calendar and highlighting the significance of Spirit of the Game (SOTG) across all disc disciplines. The week beginning May 10 will serve as a flexible celebration period, allowing individuals, teams, and organizations to host activities through the following weekend.
The decision reflects the desire of the international disc community for a more relevant and engaging time of year to honor the core values that define their sport. The chosen date pays tribute to the five dimensions of spirit and the average ten-point system used to evaluate an opponent’s sportsmanship.
Spirit of the Game is more than just rule number one — it’s what binds the entire Flying Disc community together,” said WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “It promotes fairness, joy, and integrity across all our disciplines, from Ultimate to Disc Golf, Freestyle, Guts, and more.”
Following last year’s success, the 2025 celebration will maintain a community-driven format, supported by a simple iSOTGDay Planning Sheet that helps local groups plan fun and meaningful activities. The most impactful initiatives worldwide will be highlighted on WFDF’s social media channels.
Spirit of the Game Commission Chair Wolfgang Maehr emphasized the importance of taking time this year to reflect, learn, and share:
This is a packed season of events. Focusing on SOTG in May will help strengthen our values and bring even more reward to everything we do together this year.”
A Week to Celebrate, Learn, and Grow
WFDF encourages the global disc community to celebrate iSOTGDay in creative and inclusive ways, such as:
- Hosting team discussions on the challenges and learnings of Spirit of the Game
- Incorporating spirit-focused drills or hand signal practice in weekend trainings
- Organizing beginner-friendly clinics, mini-tournaments, or try-out sessions
- Collaborating with local communities or brands to promote the sport and its values
- Creating SOTG-themed content, merchandise, or offering special discounts
Participants are invited to share their events on social media using the hashtag #iSOTGDay or by tagging @wfdf_sotg_comm.
Since its inception in 2014, iSOTGDay had been held annually on the first Saturday of December. The move to May responds to global feedback and aligns with the UN’s International Day of Living Together in Peace on May 16, reinforcing the mission to promote harmony, fairness, and respect on and off the field.
WFDF invites everyone—whether players, coaches, fans, or organizers—to join the celebration and strengthen the global network that believes in fair play, joy in competition, and community through sport.
